Start your exploration at the iconic Patriarchal Cathedral St. Alexander Nevsky, an architectural marvel with golden domes. Its sheer size and the atmosphere inside are breathtaking. Don't miss the Crypt Icon Museum in the basement, which houses a stunning collection of Orthodox art (open Tue-Sun 10 am-5:30 pm) .

Just steps away is the St. Sophia Church, the city's namesake, a humble red-brick basilica that predates the cathedral .

Afternoon (Ancient & Modern Layers)

Head towards the Serdika archaeological complex, where you can walk among Roman ruins right next to a modern metro station. It's a surreal experience seeing ancient history literally under your feet .
