4th day:
This morning you will be met at your hotel by your guide for your small group tour (no
more than 10 people). Start the day with a trip to the the enigmatic archeological site
known as Yerbas Buenas, located 68 km from San Pedro. In this area you will be able
to see a huge variety of ancient petroglyphs carved out of the rock. Your guide will
explain the history behind these carvings. From there you continue to the fascinating
Rainbow Valley, an area surrounded by incredibly beautiful hills and attractive multicoloured rock formations. There is more than enough time here to explore this
incredible place and to take some unbelievable pictures. Stop for lunch.
After lunch you will visit Toconao; a small village known for its famous white bell tower
and where white volcanic stone sculptures are made by locals. After this you continue
to one of the highlights of the region, the Atacama Salt Lake. This is an inland sea
formed millions of years ago and an impressive sight dominated by rock formations,
crystallised salt and flamingoes. Spend the afternoon here enjoying the magnificent
scenery before returning to your hotel in San Pedro. We can add on an optional star
gazing tour this evening. The Atacama desert is one of the best places in the world for
star gazing and we highly recommend this excursion. Please let us know if you would
like us to add this to your itinerary.
Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch.
5th day:
Rise early this morning before dawn to catch the sunrise. You will be met at your hotel
by your guide for this small group tour (no more than 10 people). Travel north towards
the famous El Tatio Geysers, a geothermal field surrounded by mountain peaks.
El Tatio is located at 4300 metres above sea level on the high Altiplano. It is the highest
altitude geothermal field in the world and the scenery is spectacular. At dawn you will
be able to see the powerful spurts of steam that shoot out from the geyser blowholes
and steaming ponds that are encrusted with the salt crystals.
After spending the morning here you continue to Machuca, a quaint village which was
the resting place for the llama caravans that travelled on the old Inca highway. Return
to San Pedro by lunch time for an afternoon at leisure to relax in your hotel.
TOP TIP: Make sure you bring warm clothes as it can be very cold at this altitude early
in the morning.
