Day 2
Day 2
After breakfast, take your car and join the Autobahn A5 south towards Heidelberg. Stay on the A5 until you see the exit for the Bundesstrasse (federal road) leading directly into Heidelberg.

As you approach, you'll get your first views of the Neckar River and the famous castle ruins rising above the town—a wonderful welcome.

Depending on which hotel you have chosen, you can drive directly to its parking garage or to a nearby public car park. Most hotels will give you clear instructions in advance.

A strong recommendation: once you have parked, leave the car there. It is not recommended to drive within the town, especially in the old town (Altstadt) . The streets are narrow, often restricted to residents only, and driving can be very complicated.

Instead, explore on foot. Walking allows you to truly enjoy the beautiful scenery, the charming lanes, and the many good restaurants at your own pace. Heidelberg is a walker's city—so take your time and soak it all in.

Day 4
Day 4
After breakfast in Rothenburg, walk back to your car from your hotel or the public car park. Today is a shorter and very relaxed drive to your third stop: Augsburg, one of Germany's oldest cities.
Take the A7 south towards Ulm/Füssen, then join the A8 towards Munich. Exit at Augsburg-Ost or Augsburg-West depending on your hotel's location.
The route is mostly Autobahn, passing through gentle Bavarian countryside. You will see rolling hills, small villages, and occasional church spires along the way.

Arriving in Augsburg – A Different Experience

Unlike Rothenburg and Heidelberg, Augsburg is a larger, modern city with a historic core. Driving here is less complicated than in the small medieval towns.

Day 5
Day 5
After breakfast in Augsburg, take your car from the hotel garage or car park. Today you drive south into the Bavarian Alps towards Füssen, the gateway to the famous royal castles. This is one of the most scenic drives of your entire trip.
The Route
Take the A96 south towards Lindau/Memmingen, then follow signs for B17 towards Füssen/Schwangau. The total distance is approximately 115 km, and the drive takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes under normal traffic conditions.

The Scenery
This is where the drive becomes truly special. As you leave the Autobahn and join the B17, the landscape changes dramatically. Flat farmland gives way to rolling green hills, then forests, then the first glimpses of the Alps on the horizon. You will see meadows, small lakes, and traditional Bavarian villages with onion-domed churches.
Just before arriving in Füssen, you will get your first view of Neuschwanstein Castle high on the hill – a magical welcome.

A Strong Recommendation
If you plan to visit the castles on the same day you arrive, drive directly to Hohenschwangau first, park there, visit the castles, and then drive to your hotel in Füssen afterwards. This avoids double-parking and saves time.

Final Tips
Book castle tickets in advance – Neuschwanstein tickets often sell out. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially in summer.
Wear comfortable shoes – Even with buses and carriages, there is plenty of walking and uphill climbing at the castles.
Enjoy the evening – After a day of castles, have dinner in Füssen's old town. Try traditional Bavarian food at Gasthof Krone or Ritterstuben.

Enjoy the most scenic drive of your journey – the approach to the Alps and that first view of Neuschwanstein will stay with you long after the trip ends.

Day 6
Day 6
After breakfast in Füssen, collect your car for the final drive of your journey as you head to Munich for one night.
The Drive – Füssen to Munich
Take the B17 north toward Landsberg am Lech, then join the A96 to Munich. The journey is approximately 70 miles and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.

The Scenery
As you leave Füssen, the Alpine peaks gradually fade behind you, replaced by gentle hills, lakes, and Bavarian countryside before arriving in Munich’s vibrant urban atmosphere.

My Recommendation – Take the Scenic Bavaria Detour when leaving for Munich
If time allows, add about one extra hour of driving and enjoy more of Bavaria’s beauty. From Füssen, follow the B17 north toward Oberammergau and Ettal, continue to Wieskirche, then join the A95 to Munich.
The full route is approximately 100miles with 2.5–3 hours of driving time. Allow 4–5 hours including stops.

Highlights Along the Way
📍Oberammergau – A charming village famous for its Passion Play and beautifully painted houses. Stroll through town, admire the frescoes, and stop for coffee.
📍 Ettal Abbey – A magnificent Benedictine monastery with a striking domed church. Visit the abbey, browse the monastery shop, and sample local specialties.

📍 Wieskirche (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – Considered one of the world’s finest rococo churches, set in a peaceful meadow landscape. The stunning interior makes this the highlight of the route.

Suggested Timing
9:00 AM Depart Füssen → Oberammergau → Ettal → Wieskirche → Lunch → A95 to Munich → Arrive Munich around 2:30 PM.
This scenic detour offers one final memorable taste of Bavaria before returning to city life in Munich.

Day 7
Day 7
You have woken up in Munich for your last morning. Today is simple: breakfast, drive to the airport, return the car, and fly home.

Enjoy a final German breakfast – Take your time. Most hotels serve breakfast until 10:00 AM.
check out from the hotel.

Take the A92 east towards Flughafen München (Airport). The route is well-signposted.

Distance: Approximately 35 km
Driving time: 30–40 minutes under normal conditions
Traffic note: Morning rush hour (7:30–9:00 AM) can add 15–20 minutes. Plan accordingly.

Follow signs for Mietwagenrückgabe (Car Rental Return). The rental car center is clearly marked and located near the terminal entrances.

A Final Thought for the Journey
You have driven from Frankfurt to Heidelberg, Rothenburg, Augsburg, Füssen, and Munich. You have seen castles on hills, medieval walls, baroque masterpieces, and Alpine views. You have mastered the Autobahn and navigated charming old towns. That is a wonderful German road trip.
Have a safe flight home. The car is returned, the journey is complete, and the memories will last.

Gute Reise – Safe travels home.
